Soms is een keuze zo voor de hand liggend, dat je deze makkelijk weet te maken. Maar wat gebeurd er als een keuze niet zo eenduidig is? Als er een zweem van angst omheen hangt? Als je de uitkomsten van je keuze niet helemaal precies weet? Voor zo’n keuze stond ik. Ik had een jaar met een stijf been rondgelopen (nou ja.. lopen… meer gestrompeld) en ik kon voor een operatie kiezen zodat mijn been zou kunnen buigen. Mijn ouders zagen vooral complicaties voor zich en zagen meer heil in de status quo van dat moment. Ik dacht vooral aan een been dat zou kunnen buigen (dan ging de WC deur weer dicht). En er was nog altijd het ‘ergste’ scenario – een amputatie. Vooral dat laatste klonk heel beklemmend. Maar los van dat het meest voor de hand liggende nadeel van een amputatie (minstens een half been minder), waren er misschien ook wel voordelen? Het was in ieder geval een onderzoek van dit satirische document waard.

There are times when a choice is so obvious that it begs to be made. What happens when it’s more ambiguous? When it’s surrounded by an air of fear and you’re not quite sure what the outcomes of a choice will be? I stood at these crossroads. I had just spent a year strutting around with a stiff leg and there was an option to have an operation so that my leg would be able to bend. My parents mostly feared complications of such an opeartoin and vied for the status quo of the stiff leg. My thoughts were primarily focused on being able to bend the leg with the added bonus of being able to close the bathroom door once more when I was sitting in it. And then there was always the ‘worst’ scenario – an amputation. To even think about it was suffocating. But, I soon thought, that despite the very pertinent downside of an amputation (at least half of a leg less), might there also be upsides? It was totally worth investigating in this very obviously very satirical document.
